Psychiatric Medication Management

At RiseNow Autism Innovations, we offer thoughtful psychiatric medication management for children, teens, and adults with autism who also experience co-occurring conditions.

Psychiatric medication management is an important part of treating mental health, behavioral, and neurodevelopmental conditions. Many autistic individuals struggle with these conditions, such as anxiety, ADHD, sleep difficulties, mood disorders, or irritability that can make daily life more challenging. When these issues significantly affect functioning, the right medication can be an important part of a comprehensive care plan.

Why Psychiatric Medication Management Matters for Autistic Individuals

Autism often comes with other conditions that can intensify challenges. Anxiety may make everyday situations overwhelming. ADHD can create severe difficulties with focus, organization, and emotional regulation. Sleep problems can worsen sensory sensitivities and emotional control. Mood swings or depression can make it harder to engage in school, work, or relationships.

Medication is not a cure for autism. Instead, it is a tool that helps manage specific symptoms so the person can better benefit from coaching, skills training, and daily routines. Our goal is always to use the lowest effective dose and to combine medication with practical, non-medication supports.

Conditions We Commonly Treat

  • Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
  • Anxiety disorders
  • Sleep difficulties and insomnia
  • Mood disorders including depression and irritability
  • Emotional dysregulation
  • Obsessive-compulsive symptoms that frequently appear with autism

Richard D’Amato, CRNP, MSN, MBA, personally provides medication management. With over 10 years of experience in mental health and autism care, he takes a careful, individualized approach. He works closely with families and individuals to find the right balance that improves quality of life while minimizing side effects.

Our Approach to Autism Medication Management

We believe medication should never be the only solution. At RiseNow, we use medication as one part of a larger support plan. Our process includes:

  • A thorough initial psychiatric evaluation to understand symptoms, medical history, and current challenges
  • Clear discussion of medication options, benefits, and possible side effects
  • Regular follow-up appointments to monitor progress and make adjustments
  • Close coordination with therapists, schools, or other providers when needed
  • Ongoing attention to how the person’s unique learning style and sensory needs affect medication response

Management Across the Full Lifespan

We serve patients across the full lifespan. This means we adjust our approach depending on age — from helping young children with severe sleep issues to supporting adults who are managing workplace demands and emotional regulation. This also gives us the unique advantage of being able to work with a patient throughout their whole life.

What to Expect

Your first medication management visit will be a detailed evaluation. We will review current symptoms, past treatments, and goals for improvement. Richard will explain any recommended medication in plain language and answer all of your questions. Follow-up visits are usually shorter and focused on how the medication is working and whether any changes are needed.

All appointments are done either in person or through secure telehealth, so you have the option to meet from the comfort of your home.

Important Notes About Medication Management

Medication decisions are always made together with the patient and family. We never pressure anyone to start or continue medication. Our role is to provide expert guidance so you can make informed choices that feel right for your situation.

We also recognize that some autistic individuals prefer to avoid medication when possible. We fully support exploring non-medication strategies first and only adding medication when it is truly needed.

If you would like to include support staff, caregivers, or other important members of your care team in medication management meetings, this is welcome and often very useful. Sharing information and/or behavioral data collaboratively helps our providers make more targeted and informed decisions tailored to your unique needs.
